The brief was unusually specific: the clients wanted to be able to feed eight people at one table, outdoors, in their garden. Everything else followed from that.
The table — six metres of single-slab spotted gum on a steel base — was set first and the garden built around it. We sunk the paving by 150mm so the table reads as the room\'s centrepiece, lined the boundary walls with deep mixed planting, and trained a single grapevine across an overhead steel pergola for summer shade and winter light.
It is now the room their household lives in for nine months of the year, and the only one they have ever asked us to come back and adjust — once, in 2023, to add a second grapevine.
