The Project

A garden read in long form.

The walls were the find. Three sandstone boundary walls in original condition, hidden for decades behind a layer of cement render. Once the render came off, the project rearranged itself around them.

We rebuilt the central path on its likely original alignment, reinstated a four-bed parterre based on a 1903 photograph found in the local historical society, and laid box hedging that will take fifteen years to read at the scale of the walls. The fountain is new, but cast from a salvaged base discovered in the back corner of the site.

This is the kind of project where the right answer is mostly subtraction. The garden is doing better now because we removed seventy years of additions rather than adding our own.
